Toss Those Toxic Household Cleaners and Use These 4 Essential Oils NOW
Cleaning is not just limited to Spring! In fact, I highly recommend a seasonal cleaning routine that clears up the stagnant energy and cleanses your sacred space. I personally abhor the use of toxic household cleaners because of their noxious odor but it was so commonplace at the home growing up. These days, I kick those bums to the curb and adopted greener cleaning solutions. Here are four essential oils I swear by:
1. Tea tree oil
Known for its antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties, tea tree oil is a great, green cleaning weapon to use during the winter months. It has a pleasant earthy smell and can rid stale odors. It is capable of deep cleaning mildew-prone shower areas and those mold-prone walls/ceilings in the bathroom. In two cups of water, add two drops of the essential oil and spray on shower doors, bathtub or just about anywhere in your home. Wiping it up is totally optional.
2. Lemon essential oil
Citrus scents are great oils for that effervescent scent that are artificially used in popular cleaning products. The lemon essential oil has amazing antibacterial properties and it is awesome for brightening up those cheerless floors. You can also freshen up the laundry especially if the load has been in the washer too long.
To brighten up the floors: in one bucket of water, add 10 to 15 drops of lemon essential oil, a tablespoon of castile soap and a cup of white vinegar. Stir and then mop it up! If your washer smells mildew-y, add a few drops to your wash to freshen the basin up.
3. Lavender essential oil
My personal favorite for its calming nature will always be lavender. It is antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. I add a few drops of it to my bedroom sheet laundry since the scent is known to encourage a restful sleep. It can be added to your floor wash by combining a few drops to a solution of two cups of water and three quarter cups of white vinegar.
4. Peppermint essential oil
This scent always reminds me of Christmas, gift giving and holly berries. This vibrant oil is great for its antibacterial properties and its ability to disinfect kitchen counters and bathroom spaces. In a spray bottle filled with water, add a few drops and spritz. Use a clean washcloth to wipe off- clean and wonderfully scented.
