DIY All Natural Homemade Bug Repellent Spray Recipe | THISWOMANFROMNY

Summer is the quintessential season of epic parties, soirees, cook-outs and picnics; or attending the baseball game, tending to the garden, or just relaxing on the patio.

With all these activities, you are bound to bump into a few friends and a foe. This foe happens to be a bug. No, not Miss So-and-so from the front desk of the office, but a real life bug.

While covering up for the majority of the summer is not realistic for obvious reasons, I present to you a healthier alternative: All-natural Bug Repellent Spray.

In the past, I remembered my mother purchasing so many bug sprays after we moved from New York to Florida. I never like using them because of the stickiness and the scents. I would typically ignore them and slapped on some sun screen instead taking my chances.

When I got older, I started researching everything I use on my skin. My innate reason for not using commercial repellent started to make sense.

With so many chemicals out there, one of the most common ingredients in bug repellent is diethyltoulamide, or DEET. DEET is a slightly yellow oil that is applied to the skin to provide protection against insects. Sounds harmless, right? Well…you may want to read this article.

Treating your skin with the utmost respect is the key and so it deserves natural goodness. I mean, it is protecting your body after all!

Before you run to the drugstore to grab a bug spray, consider whipping up this special recipe. A natural bug repellent is wonderful because it is made with essential oils proven to repel bugs and it smells refreshing!

  • 1 tbsp vodka (any brand)

  • 1 tbsp witch hazel

  • 2 tbsp jojoba, olive, or almond oil

  • 100-115 drops essential oil blend (see blend recipe below)

Add the first three liquids to a small spray bottle (3 to 4 ounces amber bottle works well). Add the essential oil blend and shake well before using. Be sure to apply every 2-3 hours for maximum effectiveness. Store in a dark, cool place when not in use.

  • 15 drops lavender essential oil

  • 15 drops geranium essential oil

  • 15 drops rosemary essential oil

  • 15 drops cedarwood oil

This all natural recipe is great to ward off flies, mosquitoes and other annoying buggers. You can adjust the essential oil blend to your liking.

Few Words of Caution

Be sure to perform a patch test to check for any possible allergic reactions especially if you are using the repellent for the first time. In addition, use extreme caution when applying essential oils on young children. Women who are pregnant should consult with a health practitioner before using. Remember to apply labels to your DIY bottles before storing.
