Safeguard your Eco-Friendly Home Before You Go

In a society where safety is valued, it is no wonder the certainty of security while you’re traveling is doubly important. Because of this, I’m pretty confident to say that you would want your home secured as well while you are on a summer getaway sipping on an exotic drink under a palm tree.

The last thing you would want to do is leave this plan I outlined below at the last minute; especially, if you are frantically shoving a few more items in your suitcase when you should have been out the door an hour ago. Follow my simple steps to keep you relaxed the week before and day of departure:

Anybody home?

Enover Digital Timer | Amazon

Enover Digital Timer | Amazon

Give the impression that someone is home while you’re away by purchasing and installing eco-friendly plug-in timers. You can plug them in selected rooms where it has the most possible exposure to outside- rooms facing the front yard, the side room with the big window or room the facing the backyard.

You can rig these bad boys by selecting the different times of night you want them to turn on and off. You can do the same for the TV as well. You can find these timers at major home retailer stores like Home Depot for about less than USD $15.

Alternatively, you can check out this multipack item listing from Amazon which I believe is reasonably priced if you want more than one for each room: Enover 7-day Programmable Plug-in Digital Timer Switch Outlet.

No communication

About 2-3 days before your planned trip, temporarily suspend mailings. These include everything you received from the post office to that newspaper subscription. You can visit the USPS, specifically in the sidebar links and place a request online in a matter of minutes.

If you are expecting a package, have your trusted neighbor keep an eye out for it and hold the package for you. Reward him or her with a souvenir when you get back for doing a solid. Get her a keychain or get him a shot glass. Chicks (& Dudes) love unexpected presents!

Turn off Minor Utilities

These include unplugging your basic appliances like the TV, toaster, and your washer and dryer. If you’re house owner, you may want to shut off your water supply to prevent floods. You save some moolah on your energy costs. Also, it will prevent things like possible power surge damages from a thunderstorm that decided to come into town while you were away.

So much Shade

If you have window shades, twist them just a touch to let some light peek through. While your trusted timers go on at night, it will also give the added impression that someone is home. You may want to do this a few hours in advance before you leave.

Another thing to do before you leave your home is to lock everything. Even though it is the most obvious thing to do, you may get blindsided to complete the most common sensible task of the all. Lock windows and the doors including and especially the garage.

Earth Mama/Papa

Some of us have house plants, whether if they are lucky bamboos or aloe veras. Make sure your babies get a little love before you leave by getting them out of the direct sun, soaking them for a few hours so their roots and soil stays well-hydrated, and add a little plant food or fertilizer to sustain their growth.

And/Or Furry Mama/Papa

Find a local pet sitter for your babies! Many websites now are making it ten times easier than it was in the past to find sitters who can watch your pet(s) at a responsible price. You can check out Pet Sitter or Pet Sitters at Care. Be sure to do your research in advance, to scope out the potential reputable candidate to watch them.

I know from experience that on, sitters are requested to have a background check and recommendations. Again, I would use better judgment and select the best individual to do this if you don’t have a trusted friend or family member who can sit for you. You can also get referrals from the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters by contacting them at 800-296-PETS.
